I’m pretty jazzed to announce that I’ve officially rejoined the world of the gainfully employed. As a matter of fact, I’m typing this from a chair in the sky, headed to the great state of Texas on my first business trip to do some quick research and field work with a small on-the-ground team. It’s a great (and kind of weird) feeling to be back at it again after such a long hiatus. Summer really has finally come to a close.
In terms of where I’m headed, I’m very happy to say that I’ll be joining
McKinsey Digital Labs Digital McKinsey McKinsey Design as a Design Lead in our San Francisco office. Rather, offices you can say. Our main office is located at 555 California Street right off the Embarcadero BART, but whenever I’m not travelling, I’ll be based out of Lunar’s design studio in the Mission. I really just can’t stay away from the area, which is kitty-corner to my friends at HTC and only minutes away from where Jackie and I used to live.
Joining McKinsey is quite a change of pace for me coming from years of in-house work, but in a sense I’m really getting back to my roots. Over the past few days, it’s been interesting for me to see the number of my friends and former-colleagues who’ve been surprised to see that I’ve joined McKinsey, and that they even has a design team. They do (it’s new), and it’s growing fast. Here’s how the new digs frames it:
We work with the world’s largest organizations to accelerate the impact of digital transformation. Combining data science, human-centered design, and the latest rapid-development techniques—such as concept sprints and DevOps—we help our clients deliver breakthrough products, experiences, and businesses.
In terms of what I’ll be doing, I don’t fully know just yet. I am, however, joining an amazing team of brilliant designers who will be advising and building products and services through a Human Centered lens for an incredible roster of clients of all stripes across the globe. There’s a lot to take in, and there is an incredible amount for me to learn. I’m more than excited about the challenges that lie ahead.
I decided to join McKinsey for a multitude of reasons, and getting back to consulting was just one. The nature of the work ahead of me consists of designing for complex challenges that can only be supported through a collaborative team-based environment. The past few years have really taught me the value of team (and team room) based projects, and I truly believe that the best products and services are designed in environments that optimize heavily on collaboration.
Long story short, I’m excited to be here, and I’m excited to get started. Also! If you are interested in McKinsey Design, please feel free to reach out – we’re growing fast, and looking for talented designers, well, pretty much everywhere. But come work with me!
